Photography 101

Over the past two days, I have learned so many things. I now know that to just press the shutter button of a camera does not make you a photographer. I also learned that there is a degree in “David Beckham studies” in Staffordshire University in England (I am NOT kidding!). But before I bang my head against the wall thinking about how pointless my college degree in Industrial Engineering was (or stick a cherry on top of my head), I better go back to my first Camerahols lesson or as I call it – Photography 101.
I discovered that you need to use the menu that comes within the camera, and that it has many features. Yet, in order to get the right shots, the three most relevant features that you have to master are: focus, shutter speed, and light levels. First of all, in day No. 1, Roger Stowell clearly explained me the importance of focusing on a certain object within the picture, which will be your main idea. If you get this feature to work out well , it works like magic – FOCUS POCUS!
Secondly, in order to get a balanced image, you also need to control the shutter speed (be sure not to drink more than two glasses of white wine while doing it).
And last, to get a picture with bright colors, you need to adjust the camera settings to the lighting conditions of where you are doing your shots.
So in a simple and very straightforward way, Roger has thought me the principles of photography. His teaching methods have been very effective so far, not only because he is so brilliantly good as a photographer, but because he is so passionate about food and photography as well – and that is contagious!!
What a cool and perceptive lady you are
Grazie!!!
I’m very envious! Lovely photos. I especially like the market one with those huge globe artichokes which we don’t get here, although I love the smaller, purple Mediterranean ones too.
Niort market was amazing!! I was delighted of the great produce, and impressed of French people’s pride of it..
A photographer is born!
That is funny!!!! However, I think I am far from that!!
It sounds like you´ve had a marvellous and very informative few days. Apart from a few pangs of jealousy, I am hugely admiring of both pupil and teacher…these shots look amazing. My camera is only a little point and click, but what you´ve said will certainly make me think a little harder when I´m taking my photos. ¡Enhorabuena!
